About Us

About us The Sydney Buddhist Centre is part of a larger international Buddhist movement called the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (frequently referred to as the FWBO). Although each city centre, retreat centre, and right livelihood business is independently run and managed by local members of the Western Buddhist Order, the network of friendships within the Order link all these different individual situations together. Therefore, the uniting force within this international Buddhist organization is simply friendship. And the Sydney Buddhist Centre is simply one jewel in this web of friendships.

Faces of the Sydney Buddhist Centre

Viraja is the energetic chairman of the Sydney Buddhist Centre and Vijayaloka Retreat Centre. He teaches some of our introductory classes, leads one of the men's study groups on Monday night, and works professionally as a lawyer. Chittaprabha currently helps teach one of the women's mitra study groups on Thursday night and leads retreats. She worked for many years as a teacher in a Steiner school, and is well appreciated for her intuitive style and deep love for meditation.
Khemadhamma leads one of the men's study groups on Monday night, leads the annual intensive meditation retreat, and co-ordinates the men's ordination process in Sydney. He is an accomplished potter, has a love for Zen, and is constantly encouraging us to destroy our cups. Ratnavyuha is likely to be the person you talk to if you call the centre. He responds to emails, looks after our administration, teaches some of the introductory courses, and tries to keep it all tied together.
Shubhavyuha is the second most likely person you will talk to if you call the centre. She works on special projects at the centre, teaches classes and leads retreats. Beware, since her infectious joy is hard to inoculate yourself against. Sudrishti helps to lead the Women's mitra study on Thursday evenings and frequently steps in to help with classes and lead retreats. She works professionally teaching immigration law and providing community services along these lines.
Yael does a host of volunteering around the centre, including the important task of keeping our information infrastructure standing. You are likely to find her on the other end of your email. Ross manages our bookshop at the centre and tries to find you those books on meditation and Buddhism that you are looking for. Particularly if this exploration can involve a meaningful dharma chat over a cup of good coffee.
