Meditation Retreats

Beginner's Meditation Retreats

Would you like to learn meditation? Have you recently learned to meditate and are trying to establish a meditation practice? These retreats are for relative beginners with little or no knowledge of meditation. They offer a chance to be in supportive conditions for the weekend, away from the stress and concerns of everyday life, spending a few days dedicating ourselves to meditation and meaningful communication with other like-minded people. Contact us on 02 9519 0440 for more information or to book for a retreat.

Please let us know if you are currently experiencing any kind of ill-health we need to be aware of, to ensure you are appropriately supported in our classes and/or on retreat. It may not be suitable for you to attend in certain circumstances, such as if you require medical or psychiatric supervision.

Cultivating Emotional Freedom - This retreat focuses on learning the Metta Bhavana meditation practice. One of the two meditation practices used regularly at the Sydney Buddhist Centre and within the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order.

11th Step: Buddhist Recovery - With the success of our weekly Friday night 11th Step Meditation & Recovery Workshop at the Sydney Buddhist Centre, we are offering a weekend retreat for people interested in meditation and involved in recovery. Previous experience of meditation is not needed.

Qi Gong and Meditation - Qi Gong is a practice of flowing movements that develop balance, strength, awareness of body-mind connection, and our Qi (also known as Chi or life energy). Jenny Cornish, who leads these retreats, has practiced and taught Qi Gong and Tai Chi for many years now, in both Sydney and London. Her teaching reflects her belief in the added integration that these practices can bring to our practices. These retreats are held twice a year. No experience required in either meditation or Tai Chi.

Calm, Clear and Spacious - This retreat focuses on learning the Mindfulness of Breathing meditation practice. One of the two meditation practices used regularly at the Sydney Buddhist Centre and within the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order.

Newcomer's Dharma and Meditation Retreat: - This retreat is for people that want to learn more about Buddhism and meditation in the ideal conditions of a residential retreat. You will learn how to meditate, be introduced to Buddhist practices, and explore some of the Wisdom teachings of the Buddhist tradition. There will also be personal time to reflect and meet like-minded people. You do not need to consider yourself a Buddhist to attend this retreat.

Deepening Meditation Retreats

Since meditation is an integral part of Buddhism, all our retreats include meditation practice. However, some of our retreats focus on the practice of meditation more fully. The retreats listed below are for people with an established meditation practice who are comfortable doing multiple sessions of meditation each day.

A particular retreat's program will vary according to who is leading it, but all of these retreats may include periods of silence and lots of meditation practice. Contact us on 02 9519 0440 for more information.

The Art of Meditation - Mindfulness, when done right, is impossible to overdevelop. We just need to practice being mindful. Easier said than done? This weekend will be filled with opportunities to deepen and broaden our practice of mindfulness in everyday life.

Exploring Ritual: the Mythic Dimension -

Metta: the Boundless Heart - “The great secret of morals is love, or a going out of our own nature and an identification of ourselves with the beautiful which exists in thought, action, or person, not our own.” – Shelley. On this weekend we will be exploring how to cultivate this boundless heart.

Deepening Meditation: Gesture of Balance - Meditation goes well beyond helping us achieve a balanced lifestyle. When done with the fullness of our being, meditation integrates all aspects of our heart and mind. From this integration comes freedom, and real choice. Open to people who have a regular practice of the mindfulness of breathing and metta bhavana meditations.

Men's Meditation Intensive - This annual retreat is a favourite with men in our sangha, offering a rare opportunity to give priority to our practice of meditation in supportive conditions. Open to men who have a regular meditation practice.

Deepening Meditation: Living with Awareness, Seeing with Clarity - Sangharakshita states that mindfulness – the defining quality of Buddhist practice – is a single, profoundly spiritual faculty. It is an active, intelligent awareness that can reveal the deeper harmony and higher truth of things. Here is an opportunity to explore awareness more deeply.

Women's Meditation Intensive - Contacting the qualities in our experience, we connect with the magic of being awake in the moment. Periods of reflection, silence, chanting, puja and individual meditation review help us to rediscover the beauty of our true nature. Open to women who have a regular meditation practice.

Order Sadhana Retreat - Open to members of the Western Buddhist Order

The Four Immeasurables - If we cultivate the immeasurable qualities of joy, compassion, equanimity, and loving-kindness in our lives, we will find ourselves halfway to Enlightenment itself. This retreat will explore the meditation practices through which we can do this. Previous experience of the metta bhavana meditation is essential.

New Year's Intensive Retreat - A precious opportunity to spend time on retreat, in meditation, finding calm in the midst of the holiday season. Open to people who practice the mindfulness of breathing and metta bhavana meditations.
