If you have been attending the Sydney Buddhist Centre for some time, you have probably
experienced the value of being on retreat personally. Here is a list of the retreats that
are on offer over the next few months. Please note that this list does not include Ordination retreats
and retreats for Order members.
Calling the Earth to Witness: Themes from the Pali Canon
Nagasuri will be guiding us on this retreat through two Pali suttas: the Karaniya Metta sutta and the Kosambiya sutta. Both of these teachings of the Buddha touch on the heart of what Buddhist practice is about: loving-kindness. We will explore their importance to our practice in today's world on this retreat.
Even the small things matter - Ethical dilemmas are becoming increasingly complex. In responding to the world we need to develop a tender conscience, to appreciate that even the small things one does really matter. Over the weekend we will explore the precepts and consider how we make these more central in our daily lives.
Men's Intensive Meditation Retreat - Led by Khemadhamma and Moksavajra. This annual retreat is a favourite with men in our sangha, offering a rare opportunity to give priority to our practice of meditation in supportive condition. (For men who have a regular mediation practice)
There are 3 Options for attending:
1. Friday 11 - Sunday 13 July: Weekend option
2. Friday 11 - Saturday 19 July: Week-long option
3. Friday 11 - Sunday 27 July: Full retreat
The Magic of Milarepa's Songs - Milarepa, poet and yogi, is well known for his many songs and poems in which he expresses his profound realisation of the Dharma. Exploring his songs we enter his world. Come and get a taste of it this weekend.
Guiding the Heart towards Enlightenment - The Brahma Viharas are a means to developing a heart that is kind, compassionate, insightful and courageous. Deepening our response to the world in this way, cuts through our limited perspectives and opens us to the vastness of the enlightened mind. We will allow each practice to guide us in its own way on this retreat.
Family Retreat - An opportunity for parents and children to come and practice together. Two retreats are available again this year, one for families with younger children and one for families with high-school aged children.
Living a Meaningful Life - Led by Ratnavyuha and Shubhavyuha. Buddhism is a practical teaching that can change our everyday life. Easy to say, but how do we do it? This retreat will help us meet this challenge through practical teachings from the Buddhist tradition, meditation and group discussions. Everyone who already knows how to meditate is welcome to attend.
In Search of Happiness - We all want to be happy, but do we understand the conditions under which true and sustained happiness is created? Come and join us in plumbing the depths of the Buddhist tradition to discover the nature of those conditions and we might create them in our own lives.
